Alexander Doba famous Polish adventurer, known for kayaking across Atlantic Ocean (5400 km) under his own power while having over 65 years, and doing it second time 3 years later, passed away yesterday at 74 years old while climbing Kilimanjaro.

I have been fishing for 40 years. Crab, Cod, Salmon, in Washington, Alaska, and the Bering Sea, as well as chasing Albacore in the north and south Pacific. I have run into some of the garbage patches. I have towed jigs for 5,000 miles, without a bite. I have seen huge changes over this time period, such as the disappearance of kelp forests, invasion of species, not common to the area, as well as the decline of many other species. This guy, must not be interacting with the sea, but merely traveling across it. I did not hear him say anything about catching food out there, but living on canned sardines and Muesli. You cannot see the changes, merely by looking at the surface of the water.

Wonder interview!!! Bravo LV!!! I have researched Mr. Yrvind's travels years ago... Him, like so many other tiny boat Ocean Crossers, seem to be in sort supply these days! I remember talking with Web Chiles after he returned form sailing to the South Pacific from San Diego aboard his 18ft "OPEN" boat... He said, the day I left the dock was my only comfortable day at Sea! These, "strong willed" men, became comfortable being uncomfortable. I can't wait to see a young man or women born after the year 2000 do anything close to what some of these old Sailors have accomplished! again... Thank you from the bottom of my heart for that interview!!! You really gave him the respect he so deserves... and bless you for making him Smile & Laugh!!!

This is what I love about humans. Each and everyone carries with them a whole unique story of their own. It dawned on me one day, a few years after having left my childhood home. A home of alcoholism, violence, abuse and a school of bullies etc. But what all that did was never to make me feel sorry for myself, instead it made me have a genuine interest in other people. And it gave me the realization that just as the people I pass while walking down the street have no idea about my history, I know nothing of theirs. It could be just as bad as mine, it could be worse, it could be fabulous. But ohh such value each person carries. I even had the idea of a book once... "the story of Jon Doe", recounting life events of people you don't know. I ended up not having the time, and probably not the skill. So it never materialized. The wealth of life events, knowledge, ideas and thoughts this fellow Swede has inspires me.

Crazy. When I was at university in Gothenburg (music major), in one of the practice rooms there was a poster with hand drawings of a few small sailing boats named "Bris". I always wondered why that poster was there. Now, over twenty years later this video shows up. I immediately google Sven Yrvind and it turns out his original last name is "Lundin"! The same name as the man who taught music theory in that very same room at Gothenburg University. So now I have the connection. Amazing. Thank you!!

This! This right here is a gem. It's also something I've always been curious about. Who else is out there? I would love, love to hear old sailor stories. I'm sure they have tons. Maybe not living legends like Yrvind but I'm sure there are those who sailed into obscurity but have seen and done so much. Kudos to you both for doing this.

Yrvind is our viking. the only one left! read his books! was on a seminar with him couple of years ago. was the funniest and most learning i have been in. when he was younger he always said he was a one man sailer on his long long vouyers....but he showed alot of nice girls on photos on his small boats in the 70s...and of course you dont wear clothes on passages :-) i bought all books he had on the seminar because if i can read one book of a man that have read 10.000 i can gain alot of knownledge. once he build a boat after the size of the doors to the small garage...that was the starting of his blueprints at that time. he is an amazing man that have seen and experiened so much. includimg a fight for many years with an oil company that wanted to exploit the mountain on his island in sweden! we love you yrvind! hope yo meet you again in the next boatshow in sweden! Amazing you met this giant of sailing history!

I can relate to Sven Yrvind. If you go through ruff patch in life exp with mental health issues. Sometimes it's used against you as discrimination. It was definitely harder back in the 1950's. He's lucky a lot of people in the united states never got out of the asylums. He made the best of his situation what a great story!!

Very interesting! Did you know that his father and grandfather were helmsman and commander (I'm not sure on the english titles) on a cargo ship in China in the 40's? He has the sea in his bloods. Their ship was sunk by the british and they ended up in an internment camp in China where his father unfortunately died when Sven was only five years old according to Wikipedia.
