Thank you to our patrons for supporting this video. This video was not sponsored and is purely my own opinion. I wonder at the size and agility of the cat which has been placed amongst the pigeons.
This video took quite a bit of work to pull together, we did about 10 revisions and I'm still not 100% happy with it but it goes a long way towards describing what I think is a good and safe multihull sailing philosophy.

Sailing La Vagabonde the sailing show that isn't really about sailing and is more like the Kardashians hanging out on a boat... Can you all do me a favour and share this to every sailing group and forum on the planet. Worked my clacker off getting this one done and also its the best advice I can possibly give. Lowkey trying to change an industry lol.

Riley, When I first started watching you, you knew NOTHING! I love that you are BECOMING an expert. You inspired me to begin sailing 20 months ago. I've got over 100 days on the water since June 2019. Looking forward to my first blue-water passage. I would have done that last May, were it not for the damned COVID. Maybe this year! And NOW, I want to be YOU! Keep inspiring!

The obvious problem with a catamaran is that if they capsize you are completely screwed. A monohull can be knocked flat and it will right itself. You even showed a catamaran capsizing in the video but didn't address that. A catamaran will also behave very differently as it must stay flat relative to the patch of water it is on, where the monohull doesn't care as much.

Found y’all several years ago. Love your videos. I’m a 57 yr old gent who has aspirations of sailing! Now I was a seismic engineer and have sailed around the world, on motor vessels! I am single, will live aboard and will begin sailing the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean until my confidence grows to a point that I’ll feel ready to do a crossing!? My question is that I’m quite interested in a production boat, Hunter 41 ds or 410. Am I crazy for wanting the comfort while from what I see, giving up little in performance?! Thanks

My intuition almost always leans toward simplicity and function so I like your take and... have just now subscribed. Mahalo!

A great video Riley. I was talking to my brother about it “Darren Newton” who is Co owner and designer of Dazcat in the UK. He was impressed with your comments and how as a designer for him to find that sweet spot of weight, performance, comfort and cost is very difficult and subjective especially if you want to put the boat into production. You may know Dazcat’s are principally sports cruisers so lean more to racing and performance cruising with all the requirements and comfort for the family. I know over the past year they have been discussing exactly what you have been saying, but one of the main issues they have to make a yacht design a reality is the lack of information from people who live the life, just like yourself and your family, so what you are doing will be a great help to the industry and future boat owners.👍 I know “Daz” Darren would love to talk to you about this subject and possibly help, so please feel free to contact him via the company website... Keep up the good work...

Thanks for the insights, Riley. I'm not a sailor. However, I believe that the metric that you struggled a bit with had to do with the friction that water exerts in the submerged hull creating drag. The surface area of the total amount of submerged hull would be an important component of the total drag exerted on the boat.

1:40 Does this mean the cat is bought using a loan? I will admit I've stayed away from your channel on purpose, as I'm mostly into channels who take older boats and fix them up for not a lot of money. (And I believe, while I might be wrong that this channel is the opposite, very new, expensive boat that most people cannot afford.) 2:30 EYYY! Norway :D :D (yes, I am from there)

Some good points. But to say a performance cat is safer. Is wrong. Its the sailor that makes any boat safer.Waves kill boats not wind.If a wind kills a is the sailors fault.Modern technology allows you to plan when it is safe to sail. The only thing is cannot predict it.And makes no difference how a boat performs.if anything it has been reported that carbon masts attract lightening more than alumunium. Also dagger boards are more dangerous.

Maybe someone in the know should have made a compilation or a short list of catamarans that are great for sailing and blue water crossings? It is hard for people that does not have catamaran experience to know what to look for or even what brands or models to check out. We are all colored by the vast living area, the home like feel of a the catamarans but I've never sailed one, I don't know anyone with a catamaran and I probably won't be sailing a cat any day soon. Those cats are expensive to charter, and even if one does charter at cat before purchase, chances are you will be sailing i prime weather conditions, or even charter with a crew and only experience the king size bed and "living room" and comfort features.

Thanks Riley. We are at the contemplation stage of buying and loved your vid. Thinking about a splash of blue water sailing after we semi - retire. Sail a small 3.5 tonne fixed keel around the Gulf (SA) and chartered a Seawind 1250 catamaran in the Whitsundays to try sailing a multihull for the first time. Loved it. The boat sailed well and is more down the performance end than houseboat, but is very different to a mono. Your comments and wisdom (yes, you are entitled to dish out opinions based on your enviable experience!) really made sense. Hope you both find a solution to the COVID/childbirth dilemma. SA is such a haven, its a pity you are stalled making it back. Lenny makes us laugh. M

Gladtobemom 12 օր առաջ
Absolutely excellent points. I've watched my dad buy boats. He always looks for a strong boat, strong rigging, repairable everything. He wants to be able to get to the inside of the hull everywhere in the boat, he wants to be able to get to every system in the boat. I've seen him change out every hose clamp on the boat because they were all different . . . he made them all the same and put a bag of extras in his parts bin. Galleys can be modified, a portable freezer can go in, it's more important to have good access to your sail and fender lockers, to have good solid storage for your tender, to have a high quality anchor and chain. Safety, reliability, and repairability first. All the other stuff comes after.

Riley, thanks for being a Sailor's Sailor that has a "sack", unafraid of speaking the truth, and providing your audience (and potential boat owners) with straight up information about catamarans. I have long since known that the monthly sailing periodicals, dealers and salesmen are doing nothing but prostituting themselves to appeal to your heartstrings to make the sale and their salary/commission! Exactly how many categories can these salesmen come up with for those boats displayed at the Annapolis Boat Show, each boat has some type of award to attract potential buyers. Best doorknobs in the salon, best in the 39 foot 1.5 inch range, best in show for over 39 feet and under 40 feet...think you know and get the picture. Name one national or global sailing periodical that says, "stay away from this boat, it's a real dog!!!!!" Have enjoyed your channel from day one and will continue to learn from each episode. Keep up with your good work! Best regards, crew of Sv ANEVRLU

I enjoyed this. I'd love to have a set of questions you should ask of every boat, not just catamarans. You said something like, "What's your Bruce?" Having a set of 2-5 questions you ask of every boat you're looking at would be cool. Like you said, it take the guess work out of it if you asked the same questions every time.

Riley this is an awesome video. I'm planning to start cruising in a couple of years so boat choices are top of mind at the moment. I hear a great deal about the benefits of redundancy of systems onboard - water coolers, electrical systems etc etc. Obviously this adds weight but what redundancy should I be thinking about from a safety and comfort perspective?
Tom Hamrick
Tom Hamrick 14 օր առաջ
Interesting perspective and your point of view is something I hadn't considered. Your premise appears to be that 'blue water sailing' should give more consideration to the act of sailing and the performance metrics of the vessel while underway. One wonders if consumer data supports that position. Actual time spent 'sailing' versus time spent at destination (at anchor) presents some hard choices for a family. How important are speed and the thrill of performance to a 'family' over the long-run with dreams of 'years' traveling the world? How much of this 'alternative lifestyle' (for consumers) is about the act of sailing versus a life of travel and freedom (in relative comfort)? Perspective is a funny thing. Just a thought.

Thank you so much for your video. It was great. My wife and I plan to retire on a catamaran by the end of this decade and we have been debating the qualities of the boat we would buy. So what is your opinion of Vagabond? How does she perform as a mass produced craft bearing in mind all your advice, would you buy the same again? I assume she has all the bells and whistles, fridges and home comforts. If the boat is big enough to carry all the home comforts even an island king size why not. As you said weight is good, i wouldn't want to do long passages and stay aboard in a stripped out performance yacht with a small bunk eating dried food. Surely its a compromise. What worries me about cats (I'm a monohull owner but open minded) is the pressured placed on the sails and rigging you don't feel because the boat stays level. Appreciate your honesty about pointing and tacking but that coupled with double berthing fees is a big deterrent. I get that cats are faster per foot length than a monohull but they are so much more expensive that for the cost of 36ft you can afford a 50ft monohull the same year, have more space, it'd be just as fast as a 36ft cat, heavier, point, and still be cheaper at the marina. Everything is a compromise but you seem to compromise a lot with a cat to avoid leaning to one side and actually 'feel' your sailing? Just my thoughts . . .

Do you have any thoughts about a motorized cat, no sails? I am so near to pulling the trigger on a Nordhavn 76, but then I am stumbling over the last several years of watching your wonderful sailing adventures. Mind you, I'm 72 years and there is no way in hell I'm climbing a 70 foot mast and as for weird motor spaces, forget it. Emotionally, I think cats are ugly, while I think monohulls like Amels and S&S (especially the older ones) are hymns to beauty, but I just get so angry at standing watch at 15 degree heel all night.
