#265 "I've never been this sick before..."
It's pretty rough when you have some bad seasickness which you can't escape. Lenny and Riley at the helm as we wrangle some bad weather at the very first stretch of our foray into the Atlantic. The Azores better be worth it!
Bonus: Riley puts on his meteorologist hat for a forensic post-mortem of the journey to the Azores. Every hour and day matters and timing, as you'll see, is so critical to planning and executing our journeys.

Howdy partners! As a former weather and climate prof, I can tell you the updrafts and downdrafts from a few clouds, especially non precipitating, won't be enough to affect prevailing winds. (Unless it's a pretty badass front). Upper atmospheric, lower atmospheric cloud rotations on a grand scale may confuse the air. Hmmmm. Either way, great video, and I think it would be a super fun next step in your biz for y'all to dive into weather. Hugs!!

Go for comfort not for speed = NEVER be in a hurry because that's when most "avoidable" things go wrong including major injuries and death. Comfort sailing also reduces sea sickness too. come off the wind or spill the wind or take the longer but more comfortable course etc... It makes sailing enjoyable, besides, what's the hurry? Always take a lot more food than you will ever need too. Love ya and now you have Lenny so no more running out of food. PS: That's too funny: I wrote this before I saw the end where you talk about comfort sailing etc... At least you learned that lesson. That is why we old salts try to pass on what we learned (often the hard way too), ti save others form our mistakes. Now you are passing on the lessons you have learned. Good 4 U R :-) Welcome aboard :-))) Yes Big R, always pass on what you learn. Every new boater will thank you and you may even save their life or the life of a loved one!

I like Riley's segment at the end. I'm always interested in the nav and mechanical aspects of sailing. Perhaps always having that at the end gives folks the option to 'abandon ship' at that time.

I feel your pain, Elayna. When I was 13, we steamed from San Francisco to Auckland on the QE2, and as soon as we left the safety of San Francisco Bay, we hit huge swells due to the coastal shelf AND a Force 9 gale. We were stuck powering through the gale for three or four days. The ocean was just a dark gray the whole time, and the ship was pitching and rolling all over the place. I sat out on deck (other than coming in to flop in bed) and threw up for at least two days straight. Pots and pans and china were crashing in the kitchen and dining rooms. It was pretty epic. Not scary after the first few hours, but still epic...

Hi, I like the de-brief at the end very much and I wonder why so many use windy... It never made any sense to me as I am sailing in the mediterranean and if you want to get into trouble, use windy. What are your feelings towards just watching high and low pressure areas and interpretating the weather by yourself? As this is my first comment to you, I am glad that you are still around as I watched you the first time as you had some 200 followers.... good job, good sailing, stay healthy and safe and be the good vibes with you all time! :-)

I have to say I really enjoyed your little weather analysis / lesson at the end Riley. It would be nice to continue that trend now and again and I think adding it at the end of the video is a nice compromise so that those who want to watch on and dig into the technical can do so, and anyone who isn't fussed can leave after the main content :) (but basically you guys continue to rock, keep up the good work, including sharing the "normalities" of not always having the "perfect" or most happiest of days all the time. It's healthier for you to share those moments with us too). We love you guys x

FYI You guys need to give that cat a serious inspection I been watching a lot of these sailing channels and in the last 6 months I have seen 2 other catamarans with one or the other of their hauls cracking of the boat the first one was so bad that they had to tie the haul to the rest of the boat with dinema rope they were on passage from the Galapagos Islands to Hawaii there were about five six days out of Hawaii when they found it in the middle of the night. Due to water on the sole they managed to get the boat to in the port but it was totaled and the other one was getting ready they just went through the canal and they were getting ready to set out across the Pacific heading for Australia and they were doing a big inspection getting ready to go and they found the cracks in the bulkhead between the bulkhead and the haul so might want to take a good look around first chance you get I dont believe they were designed to sail all them miles I think they were desined as a weekend boat or a run around the islands but dont think they are tuff enough for real blue water sailing I was thinking about changing for the room but now believe I'll stay with a monohaul

I really appreciate the weather and sail trim info. Getting ready to leave for our own travels soon, so the more we can learn, the better. In hindsight, would you have selected one of the low wind days to depart and just hoped for just enough to keep you moving (maybe motor sailing?) or would you have just waited longer for a better weather window?

I used to row back in high school and I had mates who used to vomit during physically demanding fitness tests. To stop the vomiting they used to have ginger to equalize the acids in their stomachs; and it worked very well for them. Not entirely sure if it’ll stop the nausea you get from sea sickness but it may stop the vomiting. Give it a try if you want :)

Hi Riley - I think you are being a bit harsh on yourself in terms of 'mistakes'. The decision making pressures on a skipper are pretty constant and always significant, and whenever schedule, comfort versus speed, forecasts and all the other variables come in to play, there are always different decisions that might have been made when looking back. Learning from each and every sailing experience shapes future decisions (I like your thought that the West to East crossing had raised your threshold beyond, with hindsight, a possibly more cautious decision). In my experience as an Instructor, I find the majority of people miss great opportunities because they rarely if ever test their own boundaries of experience and therefore don't really develop their skills and understanding. Been following the show since the start, and continue to enjoy immensely the truths of sailing you're having. Best wishes

I've also noticed the down draft and up draft phenomenon but have never been able to understand what causes one cloud to be a down draft and the next to be up draft. Any thoughts on why this happens?
